The Genius of Traditional Buildings

Graeme Sharpe/Urban Indy
The people who built buildings like the one to the left lived by different habits, in a different economy, with a different way of imagining what makes life good.  This blog post on the different kinds of buildings in downtown Indianapolis is a wise and insightful explanation of the significance of traditional architecture.

If you live in Fort Scott like I do, this is a wonderful argument for the communal wisdom and deep humanity that enabled the historic development of our downtown and Main Street area.  For many of us, this architecture - and a corresponding way of life - holds great promise for the future.
